What we cover

The three questions everyone asks before booking.

1. How much does it really cost?

Most clinics hide pricing behind a consultation gate. We collect publicly advertised per-graft rates from clinics in NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Manchester, Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, Istanbul, and 20+ other cities — then publish the numbers transparently. A 3,000-graft FUE procedure in Manhattan ranges roughly $12,000–$30,000. The same procedure in Istanbul runs $2,500–$5,000 all-inclusive. The variance is real, and it isn't just geography.

2. Which technique fits my hair loss?

FUE leaves no linear scar but takes longer and costs more per graft. FUT delivers higher graft counts in a single session but leaves a strip scar. DHI bypasses the channel-creation step. Sapphire FUE uses a different blade material. Robotic FUE (ARTAS) automates extraction. The "best" technique depends on your Norwood stage, your tolerance for visible scarring, and your budget — not the clinic's preferred protocol.

3. Is medical tourism worth it?

Turkey runs a global hair-transplant tourism market estimated at over $2 billion per year, with all-inclusive packages from about $2,500 covering procedure, hotel, and transfers. The reputable Istanbul clinics produce outcomes on par with top US and UK practices. The risk is the long tail of operators who hand the procedure to under-trained technicians while marketing aggressively to international patients. We cover the logistics honestly, including how to vet the specific surgeon (not just the clinic name).

Methodology

How we calculate.

1. Clinic price data
Publicly advertised per-graft rates and package totals from 200+ clinics, refreshed monthly. Where a clinic doesn't publish prices, we say so.
2. Patient-reported quotes
Quotes from public consultation reviews on RealSelf, HairTransplantNetwork, BaldTruthTalk, and ISHRS member surveys.
3. Norwood + technique math
Graft count derived from Norwood stage, restoration area, and target density. Technique multiplier applied to per-graft cost.
4. Independent editorial
No paid placement. No commissions on clinic referrals. Affiliate disclosure on every page that contains an affiliate link.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How much does a hair transplant cost?

In the United States, a typical 2,000–3,000-graft FUE procedure costs $8,000–$15,000. The UK runs roughly £4,000–£12,000. Australia is the highest-cost market in our coverage, with Sydney and Melbourne clinics commonly quoting AUD 12,000–25,000. Turkey is the lowest, with all-inclusive packages from about $2,500. Cost is driven by graft count, technique, surgeon experience, and clinic overhead.

Is hair transplant covered by insurance?

Almost never. Health insurers classify hair transplants as cosmetic procedures and exclude them from coverage in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Narrow exceptions exist for medically-indicated hair loss (alopecia areata, traction alopecia, post-burn reconstruction).

FUE or FUT — which is better?

Neither is universally better. FUE is preferred by patients who want short haircuts and faster recovery, and who need small-to-moderate graft counts. FUT is preferred by patients needing 2,500+ grafts in a single session, or with extensive hair loss (Norwood 5–7), where preserving donor density matters most.

Is Turkey safe for hair transplants?

The reputable Istanbul clinics employ trained surgeons in JCI-accredited facilities and produce outcomes comparable to top US and UK clinics — at a fraction of the cost. The risk is the long tail of "hair mills" that hand the procedure to under-trained technicians while marketing aggressively to international patients. Vetting the specific surgeon (not just the clinic name) is the critical step.

How long does recovery take?

Visible scabbing resolves in 7–14 days. Transplanted hair sheds (intentionally) in the first 4–6 weeks. New growth starts at 3–4 months and reaches roughly 80% of its final density by 12 months. Final visible result is at 12–18 months. Plan for at least one full year before judging the outcome.
